The causes of heterophilia are diverse, generally related to insufficient minerals such as sodium, calcium, phosphorus, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, sulfur, deficiency of complex vitamin B, and lack of certain proteins and amino acids. Discribing heterophilia as a symptom is not difficult, but it is very difficult to make an etiological diagnosis. Specific analysis must be conducted from the aspects of medical history, feeding status, laboratory examinations, etc. to determine the cause.

Transophobia generally starts with indigestion, followed by abnormal taste and heterophilic symptoms. Sick dogs like to lick food, bite wood blocks, wall soil, stones, cinders, glass sheets and other foreign objects. Dry skin, matte hair, alternating constipation and diarrhea, and progressive anemia and weight loss occur.
